I think their approach is the right one, don't game for anything, play the games and let the chips fall where they may. Ideally, the team will continue the strong play and beat the long odds to make the play-in, where anything can happen.

This draft doesn't appear to have a difference maker, there will be talent as in any draft, but it would be much preferrable if the current roster is strong enough to compete for a playoff spot and lose the pick, than to be bad enough to get the pick.

The quality of our current roster is far more important for our future success than a top 5 pick in this draft could ever be.

they can't say it publicly, but I bet they'd very much prefer conveying the pick. I wonder if they'd prefer to convey even if they'd have a top 4 pick, which is a much tougher decision.

If they do, it's interesting to think what would SAS do if we offered them say the 4th pick in this draft in exchange for our own pick next season (essentially we'd be removing the protection on our pick) - would they prefer two top 5 picks in this draft, or roll the dice with a potential 10th pick next year?

Yeah, definitely makes for an interesting debate. I think the fact that the Pacers preferred to give up a couple FRPs in this draft in the Siakam deal as opposed to even Nembhard or Walker tells a story in itself. My guess is Raps end up with 8th best lotto odds and end up conveying the pick. Top 4 definitely a different convo and I could see Raps keeping the pick in that case.
